How to Cancel an AliExpress Order (and What Happens to Your Money)

Cancelling an AliExpress order depends on its status, not the clock. What works at each stage, the 72-hour seller deadline, and where your money sits.

Published · 6 min read

Whether you can cancel an AliExpress order has little to do with how long ago you placed it and everything to do with what the order card says right now. Before the seller has been paid, cancelling is a button you press. After that, it is a request the seller can sit on. Once tracking exists, there is no cancel at all, and your question quietly changes from "how do I cancel this" to "where is my money and when does it come back". So read your order status first. Everything else follows from it.

Find your order status first

Open My Orders and read the label on the order. AliExpress moves every order through the same sequence, and the cancel mechanism changes at each step: Awaiting Payment, Payment Being Verified, Awaiting Shipment, Awaiting Delivery, Finished.

Order statusCan you cancel?Where your money is
Awaiting PaymentYes, by yourself. No seller involvedStill with you. Nothing has been taken
Payment Being VerifiedYes, by yourself. The seller has not been paidSubmitted, being checked by AliExpress
Awaiting ShipmentYou can request it. The seller approves, or 72 hours decide for themHeld by AliExpress, not released to the seller
Awaiting DeliveryNo. The button is goneHeld until you confirm receipt or the protection window ends
FinishedNo. Return or dispute onlyReleased to the seller

The rows that catch people out are the middle two. Plenty of buyers read "Payment Being Verified" as "processing" and assume the parcel is as good as gone. It is not: the seller has not been paid, so cancelling at that point needs nobody's agreement but your own. One row further down, at Awaiting Shipment, the same button still exists but no longer does the same thing.

How to cancel an order that has not shipped

Log in, open My Orders, find the order and click Cancel Order on the order card. Choose a reason from the dropdown, click Submit, then confirm on the pop-up. That is the whole flow. If the order was still Awaiting Payment or Payment Being Verified, it closes and you are done.

Two things to watch while you do it.

If there is no Cancel Order button on the card, stop hunting for it. It is not hidden behind a menu or a support chat. Its absence means the order has shipped, and the rest of this article is about what to do instead.

If you find instructions that start in a dashboard with an "Awaiting payment" tab and a sync delay, you have landed on a guide for dropshipping software rather than for a buyer. Those tools drive the same underlying AliExpress action through their own interface. As a normal buyer you will never see that screen.

What happens if the seller ignores your request

Nothing bad, as long as you can wait three days.

Once the order reaches Awaiting Shipment, your payment has been verified and the seller is preparing the parcel. From here, Cancel Order submits a request, and the order is only cancelled if the seller agrees. That sounds worse than it is, because they cannot sit on it indefinitely: the seller has 72 hours to respond to a cancellation request, and if they let that run out, AliExpress closes the order automatically and refunds you.

So the seller's silence works in your favour, not theirs.

What a seller can do instead is ship. If tracking appears while your request is pending, the cancellation is dead and you are now dealing with a parcel rather than an order. That is annoying, but it is not the same as losing money, and it is handled below.

Once the request is in, there is nothing useful left to do but wait. Message the seller once, politely, with your reason, and then leave it alone.

When the refund actually lands

A cancellation approved before shipment refunds the full amount you paid, shipping included, back to the method you paid with. Timing is the part everyone wants a number for, and honestly there is no reliable single figure: expect anything from a few days to a few weeks, depending on your payment method. Card refunds tend to be the slowest, because the money has to clear your own bank as well as AliExpress. PayPal is usually quicker.

One case is worth knowing before you pay rather than after. If you used a cash-type method such as a bank transfer or Western Union, the refund goes to your AliExpress account balance instead of back to the source, because there is no card or account to reverse the charge on. You get the money, but it stays inside AliExpress until you spend it. For a large order, that alone is a reason to pay by card or PayPal.

If the order page says the refund was issued and your account still shows nothing, the delay is almost certainly on the banking side. Chasing AliExpress at that point will not speed it up.

Your order already shipped. Now what?

Once tracking exists, "cancel" is the wrong word and searching for it wastes the days you actually need. There are two real options: wait for the parcel and return it, or open a dispute if something is wrong with it. Changing your mind is not a dispute reason, so if the item turns up exactly as described, returning it at your own cost is usually the only route.

Where you live may soften that. AliExpress's own buyer protection page lists regional add-ons on top of the standard cover: a 14-day return window and a two-year warranty for the EU, a 7-day regret period for Brazil. Check what your own order page actually offers before you assume you are stuck with the item.

If the item is missing, damaged or not what the listing promised, that is squarely a Buyer Protection matter, and it has its own timing rules and its own ways to lose. Our AliExpress Buyer Protection guide covers the dispute window, the three mistakes that void your protection, and how to run each type of dispute. The one rule to carry over from it: do not confirm receipt while you are still unhappy, because confirming releases the money to the seller.

A seller who stalls is telling you something

A pre-shipment cancellation costs a decent seller nothing. They have not posted anything yet. When one lets the 72 hours expire rather than clicking approve, or ships the moment a cancellation request appears, that is a preview of how the same store will behave when you need a refund for a genuine fault.

Make a note of it before you order from them again. Better, check the store first: a seller's feedback percentage and review history are both on the page before you pay, and a minute spent reading them beats any cancellation trick afterwards. Our guide to checking AliExpress seller ratings has the thresholds worth using.

Judging the seller before you are stuck with the order

AliScore cannot cancel an order or chase a refund for you. Nothing outside AliExpress can. What it does is the check that stops you needing this article: it reads the listing and the store while you are still deciding.

On a product page, AliScore shows a 0 to 10 score with a plain verdict, from "Safe to buy" down to "Risky". Part of that score is a seller trust score built from the store's feedback percentage on a deliberately strict scale plus its follower count, so a store with mediocre feedback cannot hide behind a pretty listing. Badges also appear on search results and the homepage grid, which makes a shortlist quicker to thin out. The scoring is explained in full on how it works.

It is a heuristic over public data, not a guarantee: it cannot see a seller's private history or predict how they will handle a cancellation request. Read the reviews anyway. But it turns a five-minute manual check into a glance, and the best time to run it is before the money leaves your account.
